Not Only for Ourselves

We are spiritual beings–individualized expressions of God.  And yet, as spiritual beings having a human experience, we are part of a family, a gender, race, nationality, ethnicity—a member of the collective consciousness of humanity. Within us, we carry the stories of generations past, and we carry vast potential to create new possibilities.

When we make the choice to liberate ourselves from suffering, the pain of our ancestors, the sense of separation existing in the world around us, when we choose to remember our divinity and live in a way that is sacred (kind and courageous, gentle and power-filled), we have the opportunity to heal not only ourselves, but those who came before us and those not yet born.

Imagine that–our capacity to be a limitless source of healing and awakening! What beauty and sense of purpose we can bring to our spiritual practice! And what is our practice: to release our identification with everything that is not Love and attune to spirit of Truth and Love that is right where we are.  Our practice is to unearth the Joy, Beauty and Creativity so we can multiply it, in service to all.

Despite every obstacle, every disappointment, every wounding, every sense of impossibility, God is. God is Love. We are the embodiment of Divine Love.  We are Love’s witness.  We are Its instrument.  We are Love in action.  When we touch this Truth, we liberate ourselves.  And we liberate ancestors and future generations.

So let us love ourselves.  Love the children, love our people, love ALL people, love the Earth, love justice, love the sacredness of Life.  Our practice is never for self alone.  It is for ALL of us—everyone of us on the planet, all of our ancestors and all of the children alive now and those to come.

When I turn to Light, release suffering, breathe in beauty and breathe out Joy, I bless myself and all generations.

…live in a way that liberates the ancestors and future generations who are inside of us.  – Thich Nhat Hanh
